The
Anzasca Valley: following in the Walser’s footsteps
Tradition & Nature
Duration
¾ day.
Description
After
winding your way up the Anzasca Valley, you will find yourselves at
the foot of Mount Rosa in the village Macugnaga, home of the Walser
people. The Walsers are a population of German descent who were the
first to colonise this area of the Alps.
Dominated
by the imposing East face of Mount Rosa (the only “Himalayan”
mountain face in the Alps), Macugnaga represents the heart of the
Walser tradition through local costume, dialect and the rustic
wooden houses which can be seen when exploring the characteristic
old town, “Dorf”. The old town is a collection of alpine houses and
stables built around the ancient church and the centuries-old “Lime
Tree” which is still a meeting point for people today.
To
really enjoy the magnificent panorama across Mount Rosa you can use
the Monte Moro cable car or the Belvedere Chairlift which takes you
within a short walk of the Belvedere Glacier, the only moving
glacier in the Alps.
