Description

All along the valleys and in the mountains there are numerous sanctuaries, churches and prayer houses which are testimony to the local population’s great sense of religion centuries ago.

An important example of this is the Boden Sanctuary (500m above sea level), reached by a pleasant walk from Ornavasso and which is home to a vast collection of remembrance offerings, the oldest of which dates back to 1707.

Of similar importance is the Sacro Monte Calvario in Domodossola which dates back to 1657 and is comprised of twelve chapels. The Sacro Monte Calvario has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
