The
Painters and the Traditions of the Vigezzo Valley
Tradition & Nature
Duration
Full day.
Description
The Vigezzo Valley, also known as the Painters’ Valley, winds its
way between rugged mountains and stretches towards Switzerland where
it assumes the name of the Hundred Valleys. It is known as the
Painters’ Valley because a painting school was founded in the area
and which in 1879 became the Rossetti Valentini School of Fine Arts
in Santa Maria Maggiore.
This tradition for painting can easily be seen in the parish
churches as well as on the facades of the houses which are elegantly
decorated.
The tradition of chimney-sweepers is just as important. They were a
migratory population who, on leaving Santa Maria Maggiore, were
welcomed all over Europe. The Chimney-Sweepers Museum in Santa Maria
Maggiore is dedicated to all their hard work.
